Greengate Baths, Salford
This was Manchester's first public
baths, built in 1855 by the Manchester and Salford baths and laundry Co. it was
designed by Thomas Worthington, (1823 to 1909), who also designed the Chorlton
Workhouse, the Albert Memorial and Minshull Street Crown Court. It was built
straight after the demolition of the Salford Workhouse which was demolished in
1853 at the site on the junction of Collier Street and Rolla Street. It is now
in desperately poor condition. This seven piece, black and white study shows it
in its final stages of decay, with all the splendid architectural detail
stripped back to evoke the last days of this fascinating building. One section
shows the original Rolla Street road sign, still there after a century and a
half.
